The Best Sledding in Breckenridge – Runway Sledding Hill
If you are looking for a fun, FREE, family-friendly activity in Breckenridge, you don’t want to miss the new Runway sledding hill. It is by far the best sledding in Breckenridge.
What Makes Runway the Best Sledding Hill in Breckenridge
Over the summer of 2020, the town of Breckenridge brought loads of dirt to the north side of the Airport Road parking lot. Heavy-duty equipment moved the dirt around to create the Runway Sledding Hill. Because the sledding hill is man-made, it’s a (relatively) safe place to sled. The hill was formed to keep sleds on the trail with gentle slopes on the sides and end of the run. Not only that but there is also a designated walkway to go back up the hill. The designated walkway helps make the sledding hill less chaotic and more organized, even on a busy day.
The Town of Breckenridge website states that you need to bring your own sled. However, between the parking lot and the sledding hill is a “sled shed”. It is filled with sleds to borrow and then return. On an extremely busy day, there is a chance a sled wouldn’t be available right away. But, it would be worth it to wait for a sled to be returned rather than buying and bringing your own.
Runway sledding hill is regularly maintained. The Town of Breckenridge actually grooms the sledding run (just like a ski run) so it never gets too icy or bumpy and doesn’t have any dirt patches.
Finally, there are porta-potties available in the parking lot. I know, not something you usually think about. But, they sure come in handy when you need them.
The new Runway sledding hill in Breckenridge is perfect for kids and adults of all ages.

Tips for a Great Sledding Experience
- Go sledding during the week to avoid the crowds. Weekends on the sledding hill, and in Breckenridge in general, are always much busier than weekdays.
- Give other sledders a chance to clear the run before sledding down. Then, when you get to the bottom of the hill, get out of the way quickly to allow the next person to sled down.
- The saucer sleds are the best! Grab one of those if they are available. It is hard to keep the other sleds going straight.
- Bundle up! There is no warming hut and the weather can change quickly.
Happy Sledding!
